Travers Stakes Picks & Predictions

As the Belmont Stakes winner and one of the key current Kentucky Derby horses it is no surprise to see Tiz The Law at the head of the market.

He has been scintillating this year and remains favored for the Derby, but he has had to work hard too. Naturally, he will feature high in most Travers Stakes picks.
He really should hit the board again, while another of the stronger potential Travers Stakes entries is Uncle Chuck. Trained by Bob Baffert, he was an easy Grade III winner last time and has great potential. It may be that his odds reflect his barn more than his form, however. With odds of 1-1, it might be a tad risky to put all bets on him. Instead, you might increase your chances of a higher payout by using him in a trifecta bet.

While those two horses, alongside Country Grammer, would all be fair Travers Stakes picks they don’t represent the best value. That honor goes to Todd Pletcher’s Dr Post.Among all the possible Travers Stakes entries he is the most exciting. True, he was beaten straight up by Tiz The Law in the Belmont and ran badly in the Haskell but he’s better than that.

Travers Stakes Results

Part of the sophomore “superfecta” along with the Triple Crown races, the Travers at Saratoga is one of the most important events for three-year-olds anywhere in the world.
From first Kentucky winner back in 1864 through to Street Sense, this has been won by some of the best. A record crowd was on hand to see Point Given win in 2001 while Whirlaway was a true star! Over the past five years too, we’ve seen some great performances:

2019 – Code of Honor

Sent out of the gate at attractive odds despite running second in the Kentucky Derby, Code Of Honor was a real good winner of the 2019 Travers at Saratoga. Shug McGaughey’s runner was three lengths clear at the wire. The John Velazquez mount paid $10.80 for the win.

2018 – Catholic Boy

Easily the outstanding performance of his career, Catholic Boy became a dual Grade I winner in taking the 2018 renewal. Once more the Travers Stakes betting wasn’t the best guide, as the son of More Than Ready paid-off at $16.20.

2017 – West Coast

The last of Bob Baffert’s three winners in this race was the excellent West Coast. He went wire-to-wire in great style to open up by three and win at Travers Stakes odds of $14.20. This is highly unlikely to be Baffert’s last Travers winner.

2016 – Arrogate

Ultimately the champion three-year-old in 2016, Arrogate also went on at four to win the Dubai World Cup and Pegasus. In winning the Travers by an astonishing 13½ lengths he became one of the highest-rated thoroughbreds of the era, then proved it was no fluke by landing the Breeders’ Cup Classic too. His Travers win payout was a huge $25.40.

2015 – Keen Ice

Yet another winner with a big payoff ($34.00), though this time it’s understandable. Keen Ice went up against Triple Crown winner American Pharoah here, coming out better in the argument at the wire by just ¾ of a length.

About the Travers Stakes

The Travers Stakes is so highly rated, it actually ranks above Triple Crown event the Preakness in importance. Only the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes are thought of as better-regarded sophomore races.

As such, since grading began this race has been a Grade I event. Travers Stakes entries, therefore, are all of the highest quality the sport has to offer.
The Travers was first run in 1864. The inaugural running was won by Kentucky, owned by William R. Travers for whom the race was named. Travers was, in fact, the then-president of the Saratoga Racing Association, which is now defunct.

This event is the centerpiece of Saratoga’s summer race meeting, Travers Stakes entries being the one thing everyone is keeping an eye out for at this prestigious New York meet. Although temporarily decreased with no people in attendance, the purse for the Travers still stands at a huge $1 million.

While this is not a Triple Crown race, the Travers is still steeped in history and tradition. Runners fight not only for prestige and money, but for the Tiffany-designed Man o’ War Cup, the trophy named in honor of the 1920 winner who defeated Triple Crown star Sir Barton.

Since the 1961 running, the winning colors have been painted onto a canoe which sits afloat a pond. The canoe has been one of the weird and wonderful symbols of Saratoga and the Travers since 1926.

It really is a top-class event and so professional bettors and amateurs alike are watching keenly for the final 2020 Travers Stakes entries. Whatever they are, make sure you are well-informed before you make your own Travers Stakes picks.

Travers Stakes Live Streaming

Despite being unable to attend in person, watching the Travers Stakes live is something we simply have to do. Having now switched to Fox, the Travers Stakes live show will be featured like this:

FS1: 1 – 3 PM E.T.
FS2: 4 – 5 PM & 6:30 – 7 PM
FOX: 5 – 6:30 PM
MSG+: 1 – 5 PM
FS Regionals: 2 – 5 PM

With many watching while on the move, or perhaps even from outside of the States live streaming is needed too. There are no worries there, as TVG will be showing the Travers Stakes live via their website as part of their coverage on August 8.

The Travers at Saratoga Racetrack

Saratoga Race Course is part of the New York Racing Association. As part of the NYRA, it hosts major New York stakes races alongside Belmont Park and Aqueduct
One of those races is, of course, this great event, the Travers and Saratoga being inextricably linked since the late-1800’s. The Travers now heads for its 151st running with Saratoga in its 157th year.
