With all the main prep races now done and dusted, the Kentucky Derby 2020 favorites are sorting themselves out.  The leaderboard was pretty accurate this year, top-rated horse Tiz The Law being the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby and it’s easy to see why.

With the Kentucky Derby favorites well prepped and the race right around the corner, here are the top contenders and the Kentucky Derby 2020 horses to watch:

Tiz The Law

Already a Triple Crown race winner Tiz The Law, who is the favorite for the Kentucky Derby, tops the list.

Barclay Tagg’s runner is easily the best sophomore colt in America right now, with the only question left about him is whether or not Churchill Downs is a problem for him given that he was beaten there as a juvenile.

Whatever the result, after his recent Travers demolition job, he is the top pick among most Kentucky Derby 2020 predictions.

Art Collector

Having been an outsider, Art Collector now stands among the Kentucky Derby favorites. Thomas Drury Jr.’s colt beat Swiss Skydiver in July, and she has since won the GI Alabama in terrific style.

As well as that form boost, Art Collector himself was an easy winner of the Ellis Park Derby at the beginning of August and that race has put him in perfect shape for the race of his life.  He has every chance.

Authentic

One of a slew of early Derby candidates for Bob Baffert, Authentic may be his last remaining major hope.

Inexplicably, after he beat NY Traffic in the TVG Haskell his odds increased given that some weren’t impressed by him! But, make no mistake, Authentic remains a colt of huge potential and it would be unwise to leave him out of your Kentucky Derby predictions.

Honor A P

A long-time candidate and one of the Kentucky Derby favorites since beating Authentic in the Santa Anita Derby.  It must be remembered though, that Authentic got injured that day and he had previously beaten this colt easily.

Honor A P was beaten in his last prep but remains one of interest. He worked very pleasingly over five furlongs three weeks out from the race.

Given their form this year, the four on this list are the obvious Kentucky Derby favorites for sure. However, we’ve seen in the past that the winner of this great race can come from further down the leaderboard. With that in mind, there some others to consider:

NY Traffic

As herd animals, thoroughbreds occasionally raise their game to keep up with the others. NY Traffic did that to get close to Authentic last time, but his other form leaves him a little short.

That being said, that much-improved showing was his best and most recent, so further improvement cannot be ruled out.

Dr Post

We’re looking for a reversal of form here, as Todd Pletcher’s Dr Post has hit the board behind some of the major players in the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Last time out in the Haskell, Dr Post was third behind Authentic and NY Traffic.  Before that, he was an impressive runner-up to Tiz The Law in the Belmont Stakes, and it’s that kind of form we need to see again if he is to stand a chance at Churchill Downs.

Kentucky Derby 2019 Recap

They said following the 2019 Kentucky Derby that it would be a race that would be talked about long after the event. Here we are, recapping the race with a view to assessing the quality of the field.

For those trying to remember who won the Kentucky Derby back in May, it may not come instantly to mind. The race was won by 65/1 longshot Country House. That doesn’t tell the whole story, however. As in one of the more bizarre Kentucky Derby results, the race was settled in the stewards’ room. First past the post Maximum Security was disqualified and placed down the field.

Controversy followed given the way Maximum Security knuckled down to win the race. But the rules are there, and the interference certainly occurred when he hung badly turning for home.

Watch the highlights of the controversial race here:

Kentucky Derby Horses 2019

Looking back on last year’s Kentucky Derby contenders with a view to the form of the race, I think it is reasonable to conclude that it wasn’t a vintage renewal. Horses running in the Kentucky Derby generally go on to better things providing the race doesn’t take too much out of them, but there isn’t a huge amount of future form from the race last year.

The fortunate winner, Country House, has not been seen since. The 2nd place has gone on to rack up four victories at the top level before disappointing in the Breeders Cup Classic over at Santa Anita. Of the rest, Bill Mott’s more fancied runner in the Derby, Tacitus, has continued to frustrate with a number of placed efforts. The Baffert duo of Game Winner and Improbable haven’t managed to set the world alight in subsequent starts.

The disqualified Maximum Security made amends in the Haskell Stakes, and looks a likely type to keep progressing. Most recently he won on his comeback from a break in a Group 3 over at Belmont and it’ll be interesting to see what he does next.

Improbable

Along with the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky Derby forms a part of the Triple Crown of thoroughbred racing. There are only 13 horses who have managed to win all three races in the same year. The 13th happened in 2018, Justify, who at the time was the Kentucky Derby favorite.

After Justify’s glory and well-earned retirement, it’s time for a new star to emerge. Justify’s trainer, Bob Baffert, is hoping that the winner will be the horse that has moved into Justify’s old stall, Improbable. He’s already had a few impressive wins. There is the excitement that he will be able to replicate that success and will certainly be up there in the Derby lines.

It’s a horse that Baffert is very impressed with, definitely making him one to watch among the Kentucky Derby entries. But, that’s not the only one of his horses that has a great chance in the KY Derby race.

Game Winner and Mucho Gusto

Game Winner and Mucho Gusto are also great Kentucky Derby horses to look at. Come race day, these horses give Baffert a great chance to have back-to-back winners.

Baffert was actually the last man to achieve that feat in 1997/98 with Silver Charm and Real Quiet respectively. There will be many trainers and jockeys looking to stop him though.

War of Will

War of Will is one of the biggest threats and has a great form behind him. His trainer Mark Casse has had a great career but has not yet won a Triple Crown race. Because of this, he will be hoping that this is going to be his year with this great horse. This horse is definitely another that is going to be popular among those participating in KY entries betting.

It will be interesting to see which horses make the cut with only 20 places available. The race is on with the road to the Kentucky Derby predictions changing all the time with a close points system to those around the 20 marks.

Other horses and bets to look out for

Cairo Cat and Complexity are going to miss the race which will open up slots for other horses. A few horses seem set to be in the mix to have the lowest Kentucky Derby odds with Country House, Knicks Go, Signalman and Gunmetal Gray all in with a great chance of winning the race.

The likes of Long Range Toddy, Maximus Mischief and Tax are likely to be a little further down in the Kentucky Derby odds but still likely to put up a good fight. It will be interesting to see which other horses make it to the prestigious event and which ones can spring a surprise among the Kentucky Derby entries.

The Kentucky Derby favorite might have won last year, but there have been many times when the best Kentucky Derby picks have surprised the field. Most notably in 2009, when Mine That Bird won at 51/1. While most races haven’t been won by the favorite of the Kentucky Derby entries, in recent years it has been dominated by them, with five out of the last six winners leading the betting table.

It will be interesting to see which Kentucky Derby picks become Kentucky Derby odds favorite on the morning of the race in the Kentucky Derby betting game. Hopefully, by the end of it, you have a smile on your face, ready to collect your Kentucky Derby payouts.

Kentucky Derby History

In order to maximize your Kentucky Derby knowledge, we should look at the even earlier history of this extremely famous race.

The Kentucky Derby is run on the first Saturday of May at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville. This is (usually) the first race that forms a part of that famous Triple Crown along with the Preakness Stakes. It happens on the third Saturday in May, and the Belmont Stakes that happens the Saturday after. In 2020, the order of the races changed: first Belmont, then Derby and, finally, Preakness.

It’s an exciting time in the horse racing season and challenging time for the Kentucky Derby horses involved. Many of them are running in the three big events in just four weeks. Being the youngest of the three races, it is the only one that has run continuously since its inception in 1875. Luckily for us in 2020, you don’t have to miss out on the race if you can’t attend in person. You can watch a Kentucky Derby live stream online to stay in on the action!

The Kentucky Derby was originally run over one and a half miles, but that was shortened to its current distance of a mile and a quarter in 1896. Since 1975, the field has been set at 20 horses with eligible horses used in back-up. The race sometimes runs with fewer horses, though, as it did in 2015 when four horses withdrew leaving a total of 18 in the Derby results.

The Kentucky Oaks, a race for 3-year-old fillies, has been taking place since 1875 the day before the Derby. Check out the Kentucky Oaks Horses while you warm up for Saturday’s Race!

The Triple Crown

This makes it the largest field of the three Triple Crown races as Preakness runs with 14 and Belmont runs with 16. The KY Derby is often rated as the most famous race in the world and is the most prestigious leg of the Triple Crown. Because of this, betting on the Kentucky Derby is one of the biggest traditions in the horse racing season.

The race often attracts over 150,000 fans who come to watch the race as well as bet on the Kentucky Derby. The event usually lasts for around two minutes, giving it an unofficial nickname of The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports. It doesn’t take long to see if your Kentucky Derby tips have turned out to be good or bad. The race is nicknamed The Run Of The Roses, on account of the flower that is draped over the winner.

It’s a Grade I stakes race and is only eligible for three-year-old thoroughbreds. This is especially important to keep in mind as a horse is never able to defend the win. Colts and geldings are allowed to carry 126 pounds with fillies carrying 121 pounds, with only three fillies winning the cup in its history.

Kentucky Derby Horse Names

As you learn more about the Kentucky Derby horses, you might be wondering why do they all have strange names. Well, the Kentucky Derby Horse Names are not just random association of words, even though that’s what they sound like. In fact, there is a whole set of rules for naming a horse, and thousands of names don’t make the cut every year.

All horse names must be approved by The Jockey Club, an organization responsible for thoroughbred breeding and racing in the US. In order to be approved, the proposed name must fit a number of criteria. For example, a name must be shorter than 18 letters and completely original. A horse cannot be named after a real person unless there is a special authorization. Moreover, often horse breeders want to reflect the pedigree of their horse by giving a name similar to that of their sire. So, for example, Midnight Bisou is the offspring of Midnight Lute.

Some of the funniest and strangest Kentucky Derby Horse Name include:

  • Whatamichoppedliver
  • Ocho Ocho Ocho
  • Imawildandcrazyguy
  • Request for Parole
  • Odor in the Court

Other memorable horse names are Arrrrr, Bodacious Tatas, Brangelina, or Horsey McHorseFace!
