If you are just getting into online horse betting, it’s natural to be a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of potential bets. In this article, we will introduce you to a superfecta bet, one of the most difficult, and rewarding bet types.

So stick around to get the answer to the question – What is a superfecta bet?

Superfecta Bet Definition and Overview

A superfecta is a wager where bettors pick which four horses will be the first to finish the race, in the correct order. Now, you can already see how this feat can be difficult to achieve. Nevertheless, the superfecta remains hugely popular, especially in North America.

Because the name itself doesn’t imply a particular number, in some parts of the world, a superfecta can require more than four selections. In parts of Australia, for example, a superfecta sometimes requires six selections, while a four selection one is referred to as a first-four bet or a quartet.

Superfecta Bet Variations

Now that you know the answer to “what is a superfecta bet?” it’s time to look at some of its variations. Like other exotic bets, the superfecta can be placed as a straight bet, a box or a wheel.

Superfecta Box

A superfecta box allows you to factor out the correct order, by wagering on all possible combinations. This totals out to 24 wagers. So if you place a minimum of $1 on four selections, a superfecta box will end up costing you $24.

Add one more runner, and the amount of combinations jumps up to 120, which raises your wager to $120. So, needless to say, the price of increasing your chances can snowball pretty quickly.

Of course, even if you place a superfecta box, you will still have to predict the first four runners, which is no small task.

Superfecta Wheel

With a superfecta wheel, you can still increase your chances but at a lower cost. Namely, you can place what is known as a “full wheel” if you are confident you know the winner. So, you select the winner and cover only the possible combinations of the horses can have.

A “part wheel” requires even more precision, but further lowers the price. With a part wheel, you select at least two out of your four runners for each of the first 4 positions. This way you won’t have to account for every possible combination.

Average Superfecta Payout

The possible superfecta payout is the main reason why this bet type is so popular. Even with a minimum stake of $1, payouts can reach thousands. Superfectas are based on parimutuel betting. This means that instead of odds, payouts are based on the number of winners and the size of the betting pool. Bettors with higher wagers also get a bigger piece of the cake.

To give you an idea of just how insane the payouts can get, in 2009, a winning Kentucky Derby superfecta with $1 wager would have brought you a jaw-dropping $276,503.20.

How to Place a Superfecta Online

Now, let’s see how to bet a superfecta. Most major online horse betting sites will have a built interface to allow you to easily place a superfecta.

Once you select the race you want to bet on, choose the superfecta option. You should, then, see a list of runners. From there, you just pick the four runners and their finishing positions and enter the amount you want to wager. Then, all that’s left to do is submit your bet slip. And that’s how to bet a superfecta.

Superfecta Conclusion

Superfectas are, generally, very difficult to win. Even with all the knowledge in the world, it appears that you need just as much luck for a successful superfecta. Nevertheless, the prospect of winning a huge payout for a low wager is as tantalizing as ever.

So, if you are looking to try your hand at a superfecta, arm yourself with knowledge and temper your expectations.
